Understanding the health impacts of flooding in Ghana and Rwanda
RESEARCH AREA
Flooding & health in African cities
Our work on flooding is based in Tamale, Ghana and Musanze, Rwanda. It looks to understand the health impact of microfloods – smaller floods that happen at a higher frequency and that are often overlooked – in urban comunities.
OUR RESEARCH
Understanding the flood-health relationship
Flooding increases the risk of multiple morbidities and mortality. Our research will identify the key exposure pathways that link flooding and health and quantify the effects of flood characteristics on health. By understanding how flood characteristics impact health, for example if a flood with a depth of a metre that lasts for a week has a bigger impact than a flood of only 10 cm that lasts for a month, will allow communities to be better prepared and also for us to develop more specific and targeted interventions.
