Accra

About Accra

Accra, situated on the Atlantic coast of Ghana, is the country’s capital city. It has experienced intensive urbanisation and uncontrolled expansion in recent years. In 2021, the population was an estimated 5.2 million, representing nearly 20% of the total population of Ghana.

Since the 1980s, all parts of Ghana have exceeded 2°C warming by 2020. This has been accompanied by increased frequency and intensity of heatwaves. The 2020-2025 Accra Climate Action Plan projects that the number of hot days with temperatures exceeding 35°C will increase from the current 31 to 50 days, with the number of extremely hot days expected to double.

Our research in Accra will focus on the health impacts of heat on school-age children and outdoor market workers.
